scythes

Greetings Friends and Neighbors,

With the Sun high in the sky and summer coming on, we are very excited to invite you to a Hand Mowing Demonstration during Bread and Soup Distribution on Friday afternoon – 4-6pm.  ‘Hand mowing’ refers to the ancient craft of cutting grass with a Scythe, a tool consisting of a curved, feather-like steel blade attached to a long wooden handle, or ‘snath.’ You may have seen one slung over the grim reaper’s shoulder. This Valley is home to a group of avid hand mowers who will gather Friday to lay down some grass in a near-silent, exhaust-free, methodical, human-powered procession.  It is a magnificent thing to behold, and I would strongly recommend taking a walk over there when you come for Bread and Soup. There will be pitchforks available for those who would like to try their hand at spreading(or ‘tedding’) the grass behind the Mowers.

We also have a request for you. Would you be willing to make a financial gift to support the work of the Farm and Bakery? We have received gifts of $1560 out of a total June budget of $5300, leaving $3740 to cover expenses for the month with 13 days left to go. All of the food produced at the Farm and Bakery is given away on Fridays. Thus, we are 100% funded by personal gifts from our neighbors and friends. Thank you for your consideration. Scroll down for detailed information on the budget (what does the money pay for?) and how to make a gift.

Here is what you will find in this letter:
